Duterte’s Dance with Justice

By Tobias Bautista

Bullit Marquez, AP

Get ready for some courtroom drama straight out of Manila! Former president Rodrigo Duterte might be getting a special delivery from the International Criminal Court (ICC) this summer: his very own arrest warrant. But wait, there's more! His daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, and a whole cast of characters might be joining the legal parade, too.

Former senator Antonio Trillanes IV spilled the tea on One News's "Storycon," revealing that the ICC is gearing up to drop the legal hammer on Duterte and possibly some of his pals. It's like a legal soap opera, with twists and turns that even the best scriptwriters couldn't dream up.

Trillanes, who's been playing detective since 2017, hinted that the arrest warrants could come in batches, like a box set of legal drama episodes. First up: Duterte Sr. himself. Then, the supporting cast might get their turn in the spotlight. It's like waiting for the next season of your favorite show, except this time, it's all happening in real life.

But wait, there's a political subplot! Trillanes suggests that Duterte's beef with President Marcos isn't just about ICC investigations—it's about power plays and political chess moves. It's like watching a political thriller unfold, with alliances shifting faster than a TikTok dance trend.

As the legal saga unfolds, one thing's for sure: Manila's political scene has never been more riveting. So grab your popcorn and settle in for the show, because this courtroom drama is just getting started.

♟ Russia’s Frozen Assets: The High-Stakes Chess Game

By Tobias Bautista

Evgenia Novozhenina, REUTERS

The West's grip on Russia's frozen assets is like a tug-of-war, but with fewer players and a lot more zeroes. With the U.S. eyeing Russia's stash to aid Ukraine and the EU preferring to keep profits under lock and key, the plot thickens.

But don't count Russia out just yet. While its foreign investments have taken a hit, it still has a few moves up its sleeve to strike back. Experts predict Moscow might start seizing foreign investors' assets, turning the tables on its adversaries. It's like a game of financial whack-a-mole.

Former President Dmitry Medvedev suggests snatching private individuals' Russian assets if the West goes for Russia's reserves. It's a risky game of tit-for-tat, but in the realm of international finance, anything goes.

However, Russia's arsenal isn't what it used to be. With foreign investments dropping and many Russian firms already parking their cash abroad, Moscow's retaliation might not pack the punch it hopes for.

Yet, Russia isn't playing defense alone. It's already flexing its muscles, forcing Western companies to sell their Russian assets at bargain prices and putting Kremlin-friendly faces in top positions.

And it's not just about the money. Seized assets come with a bonus: technology, expertise, and connections. It's the ultimate pawn in a geopolitical game of chess.

But the plot thickens further. Europe's nervous about the potential fallout on the euro if other countries start repatriating their reserves. It's a high-stakes game where one wrong move could send shockwaves through the global financial system.

As Russia plots its next move, the world watches with bated breath. In this high-stakes chess game, who will checkmate whom remains to be seen. But one thing's for sure: the game is far from over.

🏀 Celtics get their revenge on the Heat, Mavericks take 3-2 series lead over the Clippers

By Koby del Rosario

Charles Krupa, AP

With two blockbuster games scheduled, May 2nd’s NBA Playoff action had one squad sent home while another face elimination heading into Game 6.

The first-seeded Boston Celtics get sweet revenge for their 2023 Eastern Conference Finals loss to the eighth-seeded Miami Heat after eliminating them from the playoffs with their Game 5 win, 118-84. Derrick White continued his ways as the X-factor with 25 points, including five three-balls, and five rebounds while stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown had 16 and 25 markers apiece—with the former logging in 12 boards as well.

As Miami looks to bounce back next season with the services of the injured Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo went out strong for Heat Culture with 23 points, five caroms, and six assists.

Heading to SoCal, the Dallas Mavericks (#5) decimated the Los Angeles Clippers (#4) in Game 5 to take a 3-2 series lead, 123-93. MVP candidate Luka Doncic was scorching hot as he had 35 points, seven rebounds, and 10 dimes where Dallas played almost all of their players in the blowout win.

Looking to get over the hump, the Kawhi Leonard-less Clippers only had 15 points apiece from Paul George and Ivica Zubac to highlight their lowly performance.

For later today, two anticipated Game 6’s will showcase the 2024 NBA Playoffs.
