Superyachts are Becoming Super bad

by Titus Bautista

Winch Design

Can you guess how many yachts there are in the world? Okay, we don’t too. How many superyachts are there? That we know! According to market intelligence company SuperYacht Times, there are 6,000 superyachts at sea. (Vessels over 30 meters/100 feet are considered Superyachts!)

These “super” vessels have been the ultimate status symbol of rich individuals around the world from the likes of Jeff Bezos and Bernard Arnault. Sea vessels like these are known to be sources of fascination, secrecy, and unfortunately greenhouse gas emissions.

Over the past three decades, the number of superyachts around the world has quadrupled. Also in that same span, there has been split in per-capita emissions globally. Care to guess who ended up being at the top of this split? You guessed it: the “well-off”, those who care to afford luxuries like the superyacht. The world’s 10% wealthiest account for half of the world’s carbon’s emissions, according to Oxfam research. Their sources of emission range from their large homes and (frequent) Jet travels. But with the superyachts hailed as the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, according to a 2021 study. The same non-profit said that it would take 1,500 years for the “bottom” 99% of the world to emit the same amount as the rich.

The struggle to fight against global pollution continues. And we might need these super individuals to help out. Maybe it’s time to call Nick Fury to assemble the Avengers.

⚔️ Embassy Escapades: Shooting in US Embassy in Lebanon

By Tobias Bautista

AFP

A shootout went down Wednesday morning outside the U.S. Embassy near Beirut, turning the day into a bit of a real-life action movie. Spoiler: the gunman, a Syrian national, was taken down by Lebanese soldiers and is now getting a not-so-friendly hospital visit. Unfortunately, an embassy security guard caught some of the crossfire and is recovering.

The whole ordeal has Lebanon on edge, adding to the stress of an already tense environment marked by clashes between Hezbollah and Israeli troops. The gunman’s motives remain as mysterious as the contents of a spam email, though his wardrobe choice—a black vest labeled “Islamic State”—provides some unsettling hints.

Videos on social media showed the gunman unleashing chaos in a parking lot like it was the latest "Call of Duty" release. The local military quickly mobilized, securing the embassy like true action heroes.

Lebanon Prime Minister Najib Mikati assured everyone that the situation is now stable and serious investigations are underway.

🏀 Carl Tamayo finds a new home in Korea, signs with the LG Sakers of the KBL

By Koby del Rosario

B.League

Gilas Pilipinas standout Carl Tamayo is taking his talents from Japan to Korea, as it was announced that the swingman will be heading to the Korean Basketball League (KBL) to play for the Changwon LG Sakers.

The former UAAP Champion with the UP Fighting Maroons last played for the Ryukyu Golden Kings in Japan’s pro competition, the B.League, where he won a championship in just his rookie year.

It went downhill from there however, as Tamayo would see an increase in the lack of playing time he was getting which is what led him to the departure.

While details of the deal are yet to be disclosed, his fans are definitely stoked to see the 23-year old, 6-foot-6 unicorn with guard-like skills given another opportunity to shine on the international stage.

👨‍👦 Family comes first: Kyrie Irving signs his father, Drederick, to his Anta signature shoe line

By Koby del Rosario

Sneaker News

In the midst of all the hype leading up to the 2024 NBA Finals, Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving has taken advantage of being the new face of Anta by becoming the first professional basketball player to sign his father to a signature shoe deal.

58-year old Drederick Irving, who played college basketball at Boston University (ain’t it poetic that’s who his son is facing in the Finals after all the turmoil), will be the recipient of his own shoe line that is said to release this coming September

No word yet on if it’ll be a lifestyle shoe or a basketball performance sneaker. Whatever the case is, though, it’s definitely a thoughtful gift from Kyrie as he suits up for a much awaited Game 1 of the Finals this coming Friday morning PH time.

Wholesome to see their tight-knit father-son relationship trail blaze new paths for future investments.
