💦 Visa Vendetta: Tackling Tuguegarao’s Scholar Surge

By Tobias Bautista

Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN

Picture this: Tuguegarao's tranquil streets suddenly buzzing with a surge of Chinese scholars. Quite the plot twist, right? 🧐

Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Norman Tansingco's radar is beeping. He's calling for a rendezvous with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to hash out the student visa frenzy. It seems there's been a bit of a spike in Chinese scholars making their way to Tuguegarao, and Congress is taking notice. 🏛️

But here's the kicker: while the BI's records boast a hefty 1,516 Chinese students securing visas, only a fraction are actually showing up for class. 📚 It's like buying a ticket to the concert but bailing on the gig!

Tansingco's stance is crystal clear: 'We cherish our international scholars, but let's ensure everyone's playing by the rules.' After all, the Philippines is fast becoming a beacon of global education, and maintaining standards is key. 🎓

With over 24,000 student visas issued last year alone, the BI's juggling quite the workload. And guess who's leading the pack? You guessed it—our friends from China! But it's not just us; even the US and Malaysia are rolling out the welcome mat for Chinese scholars.

So, what's the game plan? Tansingco's advocating for joint inspections and ensuring our inter-agency squad is on the ball, particularly in matters of national security. Because let's face it, it's all fun and games until someone starts tampering with the peace.

Photos and videos on social media show the affected areas covered in large rocks and thick mud. As you get swamped and covered in piles of work this week, we hope you don’t get swept away by the stress too! #PrayForIndonesia
