🥵 Heat Wave Havoc: Animals Feeling the Burn!

By Tobias Bautista

Inquirer Stock Photos

The heat's turning up the pressure, not just on humans but on our furry and feathered friends too. Like a scorching summer sunburn, extreme heat is really cramping the style of our animal pals. According to a study, heat stress is like a relentless bully to livestock, messing with their health, productivity, and even their meat quality. It's like trying to keep your cool during a heatwave while also being asked to run a marathon—it's tough stuff!

And it's not just about feeling a bit sweaty—nope, this heat is messing with the whole production line. From smaller eggs to shrunken burgers, the heat's causing chaos in the animal kingdom. It's like the chickens are saying, "Sorry, folks, our eggs might be a bit smaller today, blame it on the heatwave!"

But it's not just about the animals' comfort—it's about their safety too. With temperatures soaring, our pets are feeling the heat, quite literally. From increased salivation to downright lethargy, our furry friends are showing signs of heat stress faster than you can say "sweat it out."

So, what's the plan? Keep 'em hydrated, keep 'em cool, and keep an eye out for any signs of trouble. Because when the heat's on, it's up to us to make sure our animal buddies stay chill.

⚔ Prime Moves: UK PM Sunak’s Defense Gambit and the Rhythm of Global Tensions

By Titus Bautista

Jeff J. Mitchell, Getty Images

This ain’t a scene…

It’s a g*dd*mn arms race. Nope, members of the Fall Out Boy aren’t from the United Kingdom (UK), but Rishi Sunak is. If you didn’t know who he was, well he’s up there in the photo. He just so happens to be the current Prime Minister of the UK and said he would increase spending on defense up to 2.5% of nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030. For context, the spending on defense was at 2.32% of GDP. For the number geeks out there, you know a small increase like this is actually pretty big! It seems that with this decision, Sunak fulfills his Conservative party’s wishes -- who have been pressuring him to do boost spending on defense -- and silences his critics, the opposing Labour Party -- who have been vocal leaders for defense. Take note that the Labour Party has been leading the opinion polls ahead of an election that will happen later this year. So the Prime Minister seems primed (no pun intended) to face his opponents.

Sunak has used the Ukrainian war experience as a reminder that countries needed to have a large supply of munitions and develop a way to replenish them more quickly. He says that the current state of the world has been the closest it has been since the Cold War -- although the Philippine Heat would beg to differ. “As our adversaries align, we must do more to defend our country, our interests, and our values.” His comments come after pledging to send arms worth 500 million pounds ($622M) to Ukraine that included missiles, armored vehicles, and ammunition.

If this is stressing you out, cut off all the noise of another World War coming and just listen to this Fall Out Boy classic on max volume. Repeat it with us…

This ain’t a scene, it’s a G*dd*mn. Arms. Race. 😱

🔥 Wolves cool off Suns, Pacers and Mavs knot their respective series up

By Koby del Rosario

Mike Stewart, Associated Press

The April 24th edition of the 2024 NBA Playoffs had a three-game schedule with the Minnesota Timberwolves (No. 3), Indiana Pacers (No. 6), and Dallas Mavericks (No. 5) picking up wins in their respective first round series.

For Minnesota, it was Jaden McDaniels who stepped up to the occasion with a game-high 25 points to go along with eight rebounds en route to their 105-93 victory. The T-Wolves are now enjoying a 2-0 lead as Anthony Edwards (15 pts, 8 ast) and company will now face the Suns on their homecourt for Games 3 and 4.

Speaking of Phoenix, Devin Booker had 20 points and five dimes while Jusuf Nurkic had a double-double of 10 markers and 14 boards.

Out in the Milwaukee wilderness, the Pacers bounced back against the Bucks (No. 3) in a lop-sided affair, 125-108, to even the series at 1-win apiece. Swingman Pascal Siakam was in the zone as he finished with 37, 11, and 6 while big man Myles Turner had 22, 7, and 6. The all-around effort was also joined by Tyrese Haliburton’s 12 markers and 12 dimes along with Aaron Nesmith’s 11 and 7.

Still without former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee was led by Damian Liliard’s 34 points and 6 three-balls as they will move to away territory in Indianapolis for Games 3 and 4.

In the City of Angels, however, the Mavs squeaked out the Los Angeles Clippers (No. 4), 96-93, in a wire-to-wire win. MVP candidate Luka Doncic posted up his usual numbers of 32, 6, and 9 while star guard Kyrie Irving tallied 23 and 6 of his own.

James Harden (22 pts, 6 rebs, 8 asts) and Paul George (22 pts and 4 asts) paced the Clippers while the returning Kawhi Leonard only 15 points on a poor 7-out-of-17 shooting. Dallas will now play hosts for Games 3 and 4.

Both Game 2’s of the No. 1 versus No. 8 matchups headline the NBA playoffs later today.

🦅 Fly high, RMD! The Ateneo Blue Eagles conclude their season on a high note

By Koby del Rosario

UAAP Season 86 Media Team

The ADMU Blue Eagles played their final game of UAAP Season 86 yesterday against the current six-seeded Adamson University Lady Falcons as they dominated their opponent from the get-go, 25-13, 25-17, 25-21.

It was also veteran libero Roma Mae Doromal’s last game with the Blue and White, capping off a memorable five-year career. “Babawi kayo next season, ah,” she proclaimed in their post-game huddle as Ateneo concluded the season in fifth place with a 5-9 W-L record—better than their sixth place, 4-10 finish last season.

Lyann De Guzman was awarded with Player of the Game honors as she had a game-high 14 points, which was supplemented by Sobe Buena’s and Geezel Tsunashima’s, eight and seven, respectively.

No Lady Falcon scored over five points in the loss as Barbie Jamili, Sharya Ancheta, May Ann Nuique, Ishie Lalongisip, and Red Bascon contributed four markers each. The 3-11 Lady Falcons will now wait for this weekend for its season standing, as a UE Lady Warriors’ win against the UP Lady Maroons will merit a tie between the two squads.

UAAP Season 86 Women’s Volleyball continues this weekend with the final days of the elimination round.
